New kits for the Schooling for Cleaner Lakes project will be available on Friday, March 20, 2015!
The Schooling for Cleaner Lakes project is a community-wide art project. Schooling for Cleaner Lakes was created by the Clean Lakes Alliance (CLA) and American Family Insurance DreamBank to promote awareness of the impacts of water quality on fish in the Yahara River watershed. Kits containing 16 lake critter cutouts will be decorated and transformed into mobiles by the community, voted on by local judges, and winning kits will be displayed on Tuesday, May 5th at the CLA’s Save Our Lakes Community Breakfast Event at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, when prizes will be awarded.
The Schooling for Cleaner Lakes project was created in response to a DreamBank poll that identified “clean lakes” as one of the top dreams of the Madison Community. The objective of the project is to put a spotlight on the value of our local lakes while also learning about 16 lake critters that live in them. This will increase public awareness of and engagement with our local waters.
Informational project materials were developed with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Federal Aid in Sportfish Restoration; the University of Wisconsin Center for Limnology; and the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute.
The CLA and American Family Insurance encourage dreamers of all ages to participate in this hands-on, creative project that starts on Friday, March 20, 2015. Participants are invited to decorate kits with 16 lake critter cutouts with originality and whimsy, drawing inspiration from their passions and interests. After decorating organisms, take a picture and mobilize the kit (i.e. hang the cutouts). Take another picture and send both pictures to CLA Watershed Coordinator at email@example.com. All photos must be submitted by Monday, April 27, 2015 to be entered to win one of the following prizes: $250 to the top pre-K to 5th grade 16-lake critter kit, $250 to the top 6th to 12th grade 16-lake critter kit, and $250 to the top community group 16-lake critter kit.
After judging the kits, winners will be notified and winning kits will be collected and displayed at the CLA’s Save Our Lakes Community Breakfast Event on Tuesday, May 5, 2015. Prize winners will be recognized and awarded during the event. Winning kits will be returned to the winners after the event.
